A Sensible WordPress Security Baseline for Every Website

WordPress security is a process, not a single plugin. A reliable baseline combines sensible hosting, controlled access, current software, backups, monitoring, and a recovery plan. Security tools are most effective when these fundamentals are already in place.

Keep the software surface current

Update WordPress core, themes, and plugins on a predictable schedule. Remove software you no longer use rather than leaving it deactivated indefinitely. Test important updates on staging, especially when the site includes custom code, memberships, or WooCommerce.

Strengthen account access

  • Use unique passwords and a password manager.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for privileged accounts.
  • Give each person the lowest role required for their work.
  • Remove accounts that no longer need access.
  • Protect hosting, domain, email, and payment accounts as carefully as WordPress itself.

Maintain recoverable backups

Store backups away from the same server as the website. Keep more than one restore point and test the restoration process. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Record the steps required to recover files, database, DNS, and external integrations.

Use monitoring with context

Security plugins can help with login controls, file-change alerts, malware checks, and activity logs. Configure notifications so important events stand out instead of creating constant noise. Review logs after administrator changes, unusual traffic, or unexpected website behavior.

No setup removes all risk, but a clear baseline reduces avoidable exposure and makes incidents easier to contain. Keep the stack understandable, document ownership, and review it as the website changes.
